SOLD / Vintage FIRST GENERATION #31 Matched Brazilian Rosewood Eames Lounge and Ottoman

The Eames Lounge and Ottoman was designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller in 1956 and was a near instant icon. The chair was dramatically revealed on NBC's broadcast of Home. This chairs iconic presence persists today. It's widely sought after as the centerpiece of any modern furniture collection.

This particular lounge and ottoman represents a rare opportunity to own one of the very earliest productions of this design. This particular pair is a matched set from the first generation run, numbered 31. This is identified as a first generation run from a few key characteristics: the three fastening points under the armrest, the shape of the 'ears' on the lower backrest, and the bushing in the base, among others.

This set is in remarkable condition for it's age. The leather, upholstery, and the fiberboard backers are all original with no rips or tears, no replaced zippers, and no mendings. The leather has been cleaned and conditioned. The wood has been restored, having had some minor fractures and bumps from use. And the shockmounts have been replaced with new. The restoration was conducted in-house by Modern Conscience and the set will come with an inspection report verifying the authenticity and soundness of the pair. Additionally, Modern Conscience restorations come with a five year guarantee so you know you can trust those new shockmounts.

This lounge and ottoman are so gorgeous we've taken numerous pictures for you to peruse. The Brazilian Rosewood is handsome and understated, characteristic of these earliest pieces, the dark veins are subtle. In this earliest run the Eames were searching for a uniform warm wood tone; it would not be for a few years that the lounge and ottoman would trend towards the more exaggerated contrasts that can be found in rosewood. The lounge also has the original paper label, which is exceptional, these have usually dried up and fallen off long ago.
