The La Fonda Chair was designed by the Eames and Alexander Girard exclusively for the La Fonda Del Sol Restaurant in the Time-Life Building in New York City. The chair quickly reached a peak of popularity and was made available to the public by Herman Miller.
The original La Fonda Chairs were conceived in both armshell and sideshell versions. Alexander Girard specifically requested that the seat backs not extend above the table height. When the chairs were eventually offered to the general public the full height seat was added by Herman Miller as an option, as with this example.
This particular example is in gorgeous condition with no chips, cracks, or damage to the fiberglass. A tiny 'z' is embossed into the fiberglass, denoting an early generation sideshell made by Herman Miller of Zeeland, Michigan.
